The French Young Chemists’ Network – Midi-Pyrénées section is represented by some students from several different laboratories. This allows lots of fields of chemistry to be brought together, such as organic and bioinorganic chemistry.
The French Young Chemists’ Network – Midi-Pyrénées section wants everyone to understand that chemistry is not just pollution but very useful in the everyday life. They raise awareness among young people, explaining the different careers in chemistry and what university program to do to reach them. For example, in September 2015, the French Young Chemists’ Network – Midi-Pyrénées section presented this to students in BTS (short studies, two years, after High School). With the same aim, it met some elementary school children and organized a questions-and-answers game about chemistry in the everyday life.
Some actions of popularization of science are also organized for general public, for example the “Nuit Européenne des Chercheurs” in 2015. The French Young Chemists’ Network – Midi-Pyrénées section explained to children the light diffusion, with the example of the emulsion of essential oil in water. Several participations at “Chimie et Terroir” allowed it to present to elemenatry school children and students several experiments like the separation of the dies of M&M’s by Thin Layer Chromatography, the revelation of Vitamin C in food, an initiation to molecular gastronomy, the fabrication of a potato battery, or also inflate a balloon without blowing it up.
Moreover, the French Young Chemists’ Network – Midi-Pyrénées section participates to the organization of several congresses like the tGSO days (très Grand Sud Ouest) in Toulouse in November 2014, or the presentation of the prizes for the best PhD defensis.
In order to make the SCF known from students in the University of Toulouse, a chemist kit including a lab coat, safety glasses, some chemical tables, etc., was proposed for the beginning of the school year. At the same time, the SCF was presented.
